Was lucky enough to get into the recording studio, thanks to Mark Sarisky and the Art Institute of Austin, and lay down 13 tracks of original music (minus one Monk and one Shorter tune) in two days. We got over 3 hours in the can which is really great. It was an amazing experience thanks to Bruce Saunders, Steve Schwelling and Daniel Durham, not to mention Mark and his crew who made it very easy. The next step will be to critically evaluate what we got and see if we have enough to put out the next CD. My gut tells me yes but the ears don’t lie. We’ll keep you posted on how it turned out. Regardless, the experience of rehearsing and recording my original stuff, some of which I wrote way back in ’98-’99 (!), is invaluable and I vow to do this at least once a year if I can pull it off. Balancing the family, a challenging (but fun) job, and music is not easy but it is so worth it.

Recording jazz this week
Going into the studio on Monday and Tuesday with Bruce Saunders, Steve Schwelling, and Daniel Durham. We’ll be tracking a bunch of new original tunes and I’m hoping we’ll get enough down for the next CD. If all goes well, we should have something ready by the fall. You can still stream all of my last CD, Dream Story, by clicking >> here
Wednesday night, I’m back at Swan Dive with SERPENTINE. We start at 10:30pm.
Jazz/Rock tonight with SERPENTINE
Playing tonight @8:30pm with SERPENTINE at the Continental Club Gallery. SERPENTINE features Gaute Solaas, Sam Lipman, and myself on tenor saxes, Carter Arrington on el-guitar/bass, and D-Madness on drums. If you are looking for something completely different, this band is for you. Incorporating rock, jazz, hip-hop, elements of free music, and more, SERPENTINE defies musical boundaries yet is rooted in groove and improvisation.
Playing with the jazz quintet this Friday
Have a jazz show at the Elephant Room this Friday, June 10 with my jazz quintet which includes Erik Telford on trumpet, Peter John Stoltzman on piano, Daniel Durham on bass and Steve Schwelling on drums. We’ll be playing mostly my original material (including jazz songs from my CD, Dream Story) and some classic Blue Note compositions from the late 60′s. We start at 9:30pm and play to 1:30am so come on down and enjoy some original, live jazz in Austin, TX.
Recording jazz this weekend
Have a couple of recording projects this weekend which I’m excited about. Saturday night, I’m playing with the Peter Stoltzman trio for his next CD. Peter is an amazing pianist who has played with many great artists and is well on his way to becoming a well-known jazz pianist and educator.
On Sunday night, I’ll be playing in the Bruce Saunders sextet at the Elephant Room for the jazz room’s 20th anniversary. Bruce is an accomplished guitarist and teacher who has been on faculty at the Berklee School of Music for over 20 years. He’s played with a who’s who of jazz artists including Jack DeJohnette and it’s really an honor to play and record with him.
Just before Bruce’s set, Bob Meyer asked me to play with him in his group. I recorded on Bob’s CD, Artscape
and I’m lucky to have the opportunity to record with him again. Bob is an incredible trumpet player, saxophonist, pianist and composer.
The next gig at the Elephant Room for the Elias Haslanger Quintet is next week, June 10 at 9:30pm.
June shows added to the Shows tab.

Jazz show with 3 Jazz Collective
Friends, I’ll be playing jazz saxophone at Sao Paulo’s (www.saopaulos.net) this Friday, April 29. The group plays an eclectic mix of songs from Henderson, Monk, Jobim, among others and the restaurant is a nice hang. If you’ve never been, you can stay in the front with the musicians (nice listening space), or head to the back where the dining room is – the food is great. Austin casual and the staff will take care of you. Hope to see you there!
